Keeping Wavve Boating’s Charts and GPS Working Offline in Your First Season

Wavve Boating keeps showing your charts and your GPS position with no cell signal, as long as you downloaded the area with Offline Maps before you left service.

Out on water you have not run before, losing the bars does not stop your position from updating on the chart. A compatible GPS-enabled device can determine your location without cellular service, and the internet is only needed to refresh online data. If that first trip runs on an iPad or other tablet, check before launch day that it has built-in GPS, because some iPad models and tablets without it may have limited location functionality while underway.

What the chart shows out there depends on what you saved before leaving. Offline Maps downloads a selected map area before departure, and that chart data stays available on the device if you lose your connection; once you are out of range, new areas cannot be downloaded. For a first run on unfamiliar water, that means downloading the map area that covers the trip out and back, plus the water around any planned stop, while you still have a signal at home or at the dock.

Building a new AutoRoute is different. Try it away from the dock with no signal and the app will not do it, because AutoRouting is calculated on Wavve’s servers and is blocked in an offline state. A route built and saved before you leave goes with you instead. Enter your boat’s draft first, since AutoRouting uses it in every AutoRoute Mode, then choose Prefer Channels, Most Direct or Balanced, and AutoRouting lays out a course that considers obstacles, channels and water depths, with total distance and estimated travel time. Wavve asks that every route be reviewed against current conditions, available chart information and your own judgment before and during the trip, including a route you follow with no signal.

If the signal drops partway through the trip, Wavve shows that you have entered Offline Mode. Updated forecasts, changing water-level information and other live or online data may not refresh until you are back in range, so check the forecast before departure, while it can still refresh: the marine forecast runs hour by hour across seven days, with wind, gusts, wave height and wave period, plus marine weather alerts when they are issued. Back in range on the run home, live data can refresh and a new AutoRoute can be built again.
